Song - Emily

By "Onionfarmer" Pete Proudfoot

There was a teenage lassie and her name was Emily

She was cute as a pie but the shame of her whole family.

She would let the lads kiss her and kissed them back too.

Emily, said the old folks,

that’s not the thing a good lass should do!

She would go to the Fair where she danced provocatively

showing well-formed calves and even flashing bits of her knees!

And as she shook her whole body, the gammers just shook their heads too.

Emily, said the old folks,

that’s not the thing a good lass should do!

As the old folks worried how a lad-mad lass, as was Emily

would end up in life, she announced that she was leaving for Bree.

Entertain all the tall folk, that is what she wanted to do.

Emily, said the old folks,

that’s not the thing a good lass should do!

Well, she would play on the lute and now called herself Emylou

with the lads in her band, her music it was vibrant and new!

She became very famous, virtuous and even rich too.

Emily, said the old folks,

it seems you’ve found a good thing to do!

Emylou got older and returned to Oatbarton one day

Her hair was still long but now with a beautiful shade of grey

Every Fair she would play, she was still the most popular gal.

Emylou, said the old folks,

It goes to show you never can tell!

Emylou, said the old folks,

It goes to show you never can tell!

Emylou, said the old folks,

It goes to show you never can tell!

About the artist:

Working as an onionfarmer is not Pete's only talent: With his Oatbarton friend Janco Bloatfoot, he forms "the Evendim Hillbillies". They extended this to "the Evendim Hillbillies Band" and recently gave a big concert in their hometown Oatbarton where they first performed this song, which is an ode to their famous fellow townslass Emylou Haggins.
