A letter from Graine Ashberry

Dear Hobbits,

I'm on the road! Gone well around the old forest and took the road through Stock instead! Any good hobbit who's been in my burrow has seen all its nooks and crannies filled with books, all real and story together. And now that I am five and twenty and have been for a week or more, it's finally time for me to leave the Shire and see if the stories I've read really are just stories. It's time I found out what's true!

I'll be missing you all and the fun nights spent down at the Dragon! I'm sorry to be leaving so soon and with no goodbyes, so I write this from the camp of some big folk I met along the way. I've not got to Breetown yet, but I'll be there soon. And when I'm there, I'll stay a night in the Pony and after that, I'll leave for the next place, but I don't know where that is. And I don't know how long it will take me. I've made a promise to a Hobbit or two that if I run into a trouble, I'll come straight back to the Shire as soon as I can! But until I've seen everything I ever wanted to see, I don't know when I'll be back or if I'll stay for a long time when I do come home. I've heard from a few of the menfolk here that one of the best parts of leaving is coming home for all the stories you can tell!

I hope I'll be having lots of them to tell you all when I've finished. I'm sorry to have left so quickly, but I hated to say good bye! No one likes tears, especially not me! I will be home. I promise! It's just the when I'm worried for telling you all, considering I don't know how long the journeys will take me!

You'd all best keep an eye on the Deputy Mayor of Oldfurlong for me!

With love and missing you all,

Graine Ashberry
