Dear hobbits of Oldfurlong and elsewhere, 

It's with regret that I announce that I am stepping down as mayor of Oldfurlong.  I have many a fine friend there and the decision wasn't taken lightly, believe me! But I feel that, after a year, it's time for a new mayor. A fresh approach! 

I'd be only glad to assist with the electing of a new mayor or help in any other way I can. And of course, you're in good hands with Shirriff Mellam.
